These paintings are made by gradually building up and then eroding down through multiple layers of applied colour ground. Using a straight edge anchored to a point to guide each action, the geometric striation of an arch is sanded or scratched into the colour using a sanding block or bespoke tool. This action is repeated many times in an unfolding process of adding and subtracting until a surface tension is achieved.
